First Stop, Woodstock!

It’s amazing how much time it takes to move from one home to another! It took us until 3:30 pm today to finally leave the driveway. After a precautionary stop to have all the tire pressure checked, we were finally on the highway by 4:30, just in time for a real downpour.
We made another stop in Whitby at Princess Auto. Jim wanted to change the hitch ball to one that was a better fix. By that time it was going on six and since the traffic in Toronto would be bad, we stayed in the parking lot and had some dinner. Forty-five minutes later we sailed through Toronto. We’ve decided to call it quits for the night. We’re at a gas station/truck stop in Woodstock.

We should get an early start tomorrow, and have some more interesting stories tomorrow night. 🙂

On the Road Again

Well, after some set backs, it looks like we will finally be on the road again tomorrow morning. We’ve got everything working again in the motor-home. We’ve got a bike and a trailer to pull it. What more do we need? Oh, campground reservations might be good. 🙂 I’m waiting for Jim to take care of those, but he’s out for a ride tonight. It was just way too hot and sticky for my liking so I’m holed up in the basement with a fan on me. Thank goodness the RV has a/c. It looks like this heat wave isn’t over yet!

More Wandering

I don’t know when/if we will return to our Rving adventure. Some preparations are being made, but no date has been discussed. The dream seems to be fading.

In the meantime, my mind does lots of travelling as usual, so fast that I can’t catch up with it long enough to write a blog.

We did take a road trip in the car this past weekend — a visit to our nation’s capital, Ottawa, where my son is settling in. We enjoyed the sunny weather on Sunday, beginning with a big breakfast at Broadway Restaurant and then an enjoyable visit at the home of my nephew. In the afternoon we decided to check out the Turkish Festival that was taking place in Confederation Park. There was music and dance demonstrations on the stage. We watched a marbling demonstration – the art of painting on water. What an interesting process! We learned about Turkish shadow puppets and we enjoyed some Turkish culinary delights.

Isn’t it wonderful that Canada has such a diverse population, that we can learn about far away countries and mix with their people without ever leaving home?

From there we wandered along the Rideau Canal, watching grand vessels navigate through the eight locks to the Ottawa River. We strolled up the hill to get a birds eye view, while being serenaded with some CCR by a busker along the path. We continued past the lookout areas until we were on the walk in front of the grand old hotel, the Chateau Laurier, which overlooks the canal and the majestic Parliament Buildings.

I’d forgotten what a great city Ottawa is. I lived there for eight months during college days, when I was too young to appreciate it and left for the big city of Toronto.

Since I first drafted this blog two days ago, progress has been made!  We MIGHT be heading out on Sunday or Monday for an extended trip, first stop Sturgis (South Dakota) Motorcycle Rally.  We just have to find a trailer for the motorbike, and then hope that the campgrounds aren’t already booked up. If we go, it will be exciting. Stay tuned!

Have we gone mad?

What a scary and paranoid world it’s become! Two summits of world leaders are about to take place in Toronto and Huntsville and large portions of these cities will be locked down, after millions of dollars have been spent on fake lakes and refurbishing to impress our visitors and promote our country. It’s going to be impossible for the citizens of Toronto to plan their lives or even plan to get to work on time for those few days. Roads will be closed without much notice if any motorcades are travelling them. Fences surround the meeting areas; military snipers will be on the roof tops. The latest news is that young trees along the area streets will be removed just in case a branch from one of them could be turned into a weapon, and the hospitals are sending patients home early in order to clear beds in anticipation of what? “Build it and they will come”. Plan for it and it will happen. Isn’t the purpose of these summits to make the world a better place? Just how does this work? Do our “enemies” need any other weapons to destroy us, or will paranoia do the trick?

Choices

We returned from our maiden voyage geared to make adjustments and improvements to the motor home in preparation for a much longer trip starting in July. We’ve both been pulled towards doing those things, but have had to take care of the jobs of maintaining our permanent home, and attending to doctor’s appointments.  Those appointments have brought on other appointments, for most of which we have to play the waiting game to see when they will be. Jim says we’ll work around them; I say, since none of our ailments are life-threatening, let’s just postpone them for six months or a year until we return. Life is too short to waste time waiting for confirmation that you’re getting old and your bones and joints are wearing out! I’d rather just deal with the pain as it comes.  It seems to come less frequently when we’re out exploring and not worrying about it.

And What Emotions They Were!

Little did I know that the funeral that cut our visit with friends in Connecticut short was the beginning of a trilogy. Before we got home we received an email informing us of the death of the mother-in-law of one of our biker friends.

Then, on Thursday, after a long day of driving straight through to Canada we decided we needed a rest so “camped” at my brother’s place in Brockville for the night. It was a couple of hours closer than home from the bridge. When we arrived there, we learned that my brother’s son-in-law, only 44 yrs. old, had died suddenly that morning. Welcome back to reality!

Friday we made the three hour drive back home and attended the first wake here. On Sunday we drove back to Brockville for the wake and funeral there.

When we got home again this afternoon, we were tempted to just load everything back into the RV and head out again! But alas, we have some commitments for the month of June, so it will be July before this becomes a travel blog once more. In the meantime, I have a few other things on my mind. Stay tuned. 🙂

Heading Home

Mystic was beautiful, an interesting museum. The campground was nice too, but sadly the WIFI that they said they had didn’t work. Two days without internet, trying to run online businesses and post blogs was very frustrating! Our visit with our friends in Bloomfield, Ct was cut a day short, due to a death in their family. The funeral was today. So we’ve headed for home. We finally found a connection here at a truck stop on our way towards Syracuse NY and our cross into Canada. This trip is about over. Sigh. Am I ready to dive back into the emotional turmoils, the to-do-lists? Not really, but at least I’m stronger now.

Living the Dream

What a difference an escape from the constantly building pressures of life at home can make. When I set up this blog back in January, the purpose was to unleash those pressures through written words. Unfortunately the pressures were so great and ever-changing, I couldn’t find the time to write.  Eventually, my mind would speed onto a new one, leaving the previous one in the dust.

For now, I have escaped, taken off.  The need to sound off has evaporated.

We’ve been travelling in our newly acquired motor-home for ten days now. We’ve visited Quebec, Maine and Massachusetts. Today we’re sitting in a KOA park about 15 miles from Plymouth, Massachusetts. The sun is shining through the trees, the birds are singing in the trees.  This afternoon we took a bicycle ride the few miles into town and back, stopping to take pictures at a little park that had a fish ladder and the remains of some old stone walls. We couldn’t find any explanation of the walls. Canada Geese were enjoying a swim in the stream. Can’t escape them!

For now, we’re “living the dream”. For now this will be a travel blog. Tune in again …
